Thereafter followed the election of the deputy to the Bishop. The Deputy of the Bishop is Pastor Burgert Brand. In the election for the alternate to the Deputy of the Bishop Dean Jaeckel was the successful candidate. The President of the Synod then led the Synod through a presentation dealing with the issue of the payment of salaries of Pastor's either locally or from Head Office. Church Council proposes that the experiment being conducted by the West Rand Lutheran Community Church be ended and that the West Rand Pastor be paid centrally as all other Pastors. The session was closed by a devotion by Mrs Letlape.

Synod: Day Two - Part Four

By the Grace of God we have a new Bishop: Horst Mueller

Synod: Day Two - Part Three

After tea the Synod broke into groups and discussed the issues defined.

In the report back phase the groups highlighted the following: the role of greed, selfishness and the lack of education; the responsible use of scarce resources, especially water; the impact of climate change; littering; challenging and questioning assumptions; the placing of water collection tanks at churches; generating overall environmental awareness; the role of environmental agencies; not allowing the magnitude of the problem to result in a feeling of being overwhelmed; the need for greater scientific expertise; finding the right balance between rights and responsibilities; addressing the fundamental changes that need to take place; the problem of indifference; education, education, education.

After the report back there followed a plenary session of question and answers where delegates engaged with Bishop Davies on environmental questions. After lunch, Bishop Davies held another presentation on the concept of an eco-congregation. Although everything God created is good, things are not well with Creation. What can congregations do? Recycling, food gardens, youth projects, water wise plants, helping others to help themselves. An eco-congregation is a congregation that makes a commitment to live more lightly on the Earth. Initiate local projects of recycling, drama groups, etc to convey the message. The eco-congregation can also dedicate special days to specific eco-topics and sets an example to the community through the conscious stewardship of scarce resources such as water, energy, etc. The eco-congregation lives its faith in the world and addresses social issues. The Church can be a powerhouse of transformation. Local congregations can start small and develop local issues and projects in an environmental context.

Synod went back into group discussions to ponder the following issues:
How can we respond as God's mandated custodians of God's Creation?
What can we do? Locally? Nationally? Globally?
The groups returned to the plenary session and reported back on their deliberations. Suggestions made include: becoming members of SAFCEI, one Sunday of the year is used to focus on the environment, promote eco-justice, one collection a year dedicated for an environmental cause, get guest speakers into the congregations to speak on enviro issues, the establishment of enviro committees in congregations, solar panels for the manses, congregations need to inform themselves about local initiatives, educate local communities, include a "green message" in the announcements, enviro pages in the newsletters, pray for those in charge to make the right decisions, use Lent to "live simply so that others can simply live", have an electricity free service, have an environmental officer for the Synod, use the churches as recycling centres, place the topic of environmental awareness on the agendas of congregation councils, etc.

Synod then passed a resolution in support of the SAFCEI resolution in support of the reduction in emission of greenhouse gases to be discussed at the Conference in Copenhagen in December. The full text of the resolution is available of the SAFCEI website.

The session was closed by a word of greeting by Dr. K. Gerber who is the General-Secretary of the Dutch Reformed Church. In his greeting Dr Gerber spoke on the improved relations between the Lutheran and Reformed churches. He also thanked Bishop Lilje for the good cooperation between the leadership elements of the two churches.

Synod: Day Two - Part Two

After an opening devotion by Pastor Focke, Synod received a word of greeting from Bishop Moyo of LUCSA. Bishop Moyo praised the ELCSA(N-T) for its active participation in LUCSA. He thanked Bishop Lilje for his leadership and contribution to LUCSA.

Bishop Davies opened the keynote address with a video on the state of the environment in general. Thereafter he dealt with issues such as looking after the environment is not a luxury but a necessity. In general, all faith communities need to harness their efforts in pursuit of environmental justice. One way in achieving this was the establishment of eco-congregation which consciously monitor our carbon footprint. Creation Care must be part of the mission objectives of all faith communities. Gods Kingdom is made up of all Creation. In giving Man dominion over Creation, God gave Man the responsibility.

Bishop Davies then went to illustrate a variety of environmental issues, the most serious of these is climate change and global warming. Motivated by greed and population growth, the fundamental existence of Man is threatened and action is required immediately. The sustainability of Man is questioned. A possible solution could be a reorientation of the relationship of economy, society and the environment. The current lack of eco-justice and economic justice can be seen as an affront to God. The establishment of justice, not only in South Africa but also in the world, is a burning issue that needs to be addressed. A first step could be the halting of wastage of resources on arms and armaments. The establishment of ecological justice will also promote the living of harmony with God's creation. Difficult decisions need to be taken regarding the use of resources, economics, the environment, society, health, culture and society. We need to seek a sustainable future for all parts of God's creation. Bishop Davies is of the opinion that an multi-faith approach is the only strategy that stands any hope of success in pursuing these goals. Using the Bible as a foundation, Christians must become part of the solution.

Bishop Davies called upon all to focus on the Copenhagen climate conference which will take place on 12th an 13th December. He called for midday prayers on these days, and activities focused on the issue of climate change. In addition he called for support for a change in approach to energy in South Africa forcing the government to focus on renewable energy instead of coal and nuclear power.

Synod was then divided into groups to reflect on the following issues:
What are the enviro challenges we are facing?
What are we already doing?
How can we respond as God's mandated custodians of God's Creation?
What can we do? Locally? Nationally? Globally?
The groups are challenged to discuss these issues and return to the plenary session with a brief report back.

Bishop Davies also challenged the Synod to develop a response to the topic and possibly develop a resolution to be considered by the Synod.

Synod: Day Two - Part One

Today's agenda will be dominated by the lecture by Bishop Geoff Davies on the Theme of Synod - Our responsibility in God's Creation - and the election of the Bishop.
The session after supper last night was filled by the words of Greeting of three guests and the passage of the Budget. In her word of greeting, the EKD representative, Dr. Guetter, emphasized the good relations between the South African Lutheran Churches and the EKD. She also thanked Bishop Lilje for his exemplary leadership of the ELCSA(N-T) in difficult times. Bishop Rohwer of the Caper Church dwelled on the responsibility of Man as co-creator and co-destroyer of Creation. Bishop Rohwer also thanked Bishop Lilje for the excellent personal and professional relationship during the years of his tenure as Bishop. Rev Mathe, the General-Secretary of the ELCSA, conveyed words of greeting from the ELCSA. He thanked Bishop Lilje for his dedicated leadership and expressed the hope that the formation of the United Church Council of all the Lutheran Churches would enable the Lutherans to speak with one voice. The Treasurer, Ron Kuesel, presented the financial report of the last two years and well as the budget for 2010 and 2011. Both were accepted unanimously. The evening session was clossed by a devotion led by Dean Roehrs.

Synod: Day One

The Synod began at two this afternoon with the opening service in which Bishop Lilje spoke on the theme of Creation and how we fit into the bigger picture. There after the formal business of Synod began with all the formalities associated with the constituting of Synod. The first session was concluded with words of greeting from Dr. Claudio Steinert from the ELM and a word of greeting from Dr. D. Reinstorf of the Free Church. The presence of a representative of the Free Church was met with acclamation and was a clear of sign of a need of improved relations between the ELCSA (N-T) and FELSiSA. The second session was dedicated to the discussion of the report of the Church Council which was presented by Bishop Lilje. Some of the issues discussed, emanating from the report, were the interpretation of the regulations regarding the extension of tenure of Pastor’s, the wok done on the research of colonial history and the need to work on the Apartheid history in the context of reconciliation. The formation of a United Church Council was unanimously endorsed by Synod and Church Council is to invest all energies to promote this body. Currently Synod is enjoying a supper break.
